One’s to Watch for U18/20 REC Edition – Portugal

In anticipation of the U18 and 20 Championships that are set for Prague, Rugby Europe will be interviewing some of the rising stars of the teams competing to understand their goals, playing style and much more.

Portugal is first up, where we speak with utility back Manuel Vareiro.

What are your team’s goals for the 2024 Men’s Rugby Europe Championship U20?

MV. Our goal is to give everything we have and play top-quality rugby. We're confident in the work we've put in and strongly believe that our coaches' plans will be effective.

What are your team’s best traits?

MV. I think we have a solid pack of forwards, combining experience from players who’ve been part of the Lusitanos XV and those playing at senior level for their clubs. We have a strong, unified group.

Do you have any objectives you would like to achieve in the competition?

MV. My personal goal is to give my all and help my teammates become the best versions of themselves. We're focused on working as a team, not on individual performances because we play for our country, and that means a lot to us.

Do you think it is important for your country to play in this competition? Can you explain why?

MV. Absolutely. This competition is a great opportunity for us to measure ourselves against other nations, and it’s crucial for our development as players, team and country.

What message would you like to share with your team’s fans?

MV. We need your support! Be there in Czechia to help us win the Championship!

But Manuel Vareiro isn’t the only threat in the Portuguese camp, as three others fall into the same category. They are:

José Lavos (U20 / Prop): Quick off his feet, aggressive in the contact area and a hard-worker in the set-piece, José Lavos is destined to be one of Portugal’s main stars. Having already been to a couple of Lobos camps, the prop will play a key role in the Portuguese scrum.

Tomás Marques (U18 / Fly-half): Tomás Marques has all the panache of a classical fly-half, bombarding the opposition with surgical kicks that create havoc and chaos. His leadership skills were one of the pillars for Portugal’s great showing in the 2023 U18 Championship and will play again a vital part in this year’s campaign.

Miguel Romero (U18 / Number-eight): A gifted tackler and jackler, Miguel Romero has built a reputation as a fearsome enforcer who can turn the tide with just a simple action. His handling skills can be a threat, especially when it comes down to his offloading game.
