Black Lion make it four Super Cup Trophies with win over Lusitanos

Black Lion underlined their Rugby Europe Super Cup dominance when they made sure of their fourth title in a row on Saturday.

The Georgian outfit have set the standards and been the team that everyone has been chasing since it all began and they are now champions for 2024/25 after a 36-0 bonus point home win over Lusitanos in the Avchala Rugby Stadium in Tbilisi.

Stand-off Luke Matkava got things off to the perfect start for the hosts against their visitors from Portugal when he scored a try after just five minutes. He converted too for 7-0.

Lusitanos then had a forward yellow carded and Black Lion took advantage with a second try through back-row man Giorgi Sinauridze.

They then scored a third try of the game, and a second with Lusitanos down to 14, when scrum half Tengiz Peranidze went over.

That made it 17-0 and things got worse for Lusitanos as they gave away a penalty try and lost a second player to the sin bin before half-time.

It did take until the 58th minute for Black Lion to score try number five, Peranidze going over for a converted effort before replacement Amiran Shvangiradze scored their sixth and final try to put the icing on the cake after 65 minutes.

The 36-0 triumph puts Black Lion on 20 points from their four Pool A games meaning neither Spanish side Iberians or Lusitanos can catch them despite having a game between themselves to come this coming Sunday.

The Pool B finals day also takes place this coming weekend, on the Saturday, while Black Lion will head into upcoming European Challenge Cup action on a high.

Elsewhere at the weekend, on international duty, the men’s teams from Slovenia and Denmark were on excellent form.

In the Rugby Europe Conference, Slovenia defeated Kosovo 74-10 at home while Denmark were on the road and got the better of Estonia 105-0 in a one-sided affair.
